Diamond Head. This crater of an extinct
volcano got its name when Western explorers mistook calcite crystals
they found there for diamonds. The historic trail to the 761-foot summit
starts inside the crater and is an easy, but steep, 45-m inute
hike to the top. Stay on the trail, wear
appropriate footgear and sunscreen, take along water and bring a
flashlight to light your way through the tunnels. Those who reach the summit are rewarded by a
spectacular 360-degree view of Oahu.
Pearl Harbor. While the harbor is quite large, the Visitor's Center and
Arizona Memorial are
the hubs of tourism.
Hawaii's
beaches have been
a tourist destination
extraordinaire. Their original beauty can still be seen in the crashing waves and the warm
sand and sweeping palm trees.
Some Comments From Past Travelers:
Our
family really enjoyed the aquarium. Sure, you can make it through in
15 or 20 minutes if you just want to look at the fish, but you can do that
at a pet store. If you take full advantage of all this aquarium has to
offer, you won't be disappointed. We spent 2 hours at the aquarium because
there were so many fascinating things to see.
We have been to zoos all over the world and this one was great! It reflects
the Hawaiian culture of beauty and spectacular sights, all within a compact
area.
It is the perfect place to go when you want to do something other than water
sports. It is easy to find and parking is available.
Best thing about the zoo is the Children's Zoo located in the zoo. Fish tank &
Guinea Pig exhibits are the best! You can go in with the goats, (don't be
afraid!). Bird exhibits are cool. The zoo is pretty clean! We didn't see
the lions, cheetahs, alligators, wild dogs, and tigers
This
was a great value at only $9.00 a person to get you in to see tons of fish and
marine life. There are headsets that tell you by number codes what each
display contains so you are educated instead of just left guessing.
There is a touch pool for the kids with an attendant. There is a great
indoor and outdoor section.
We
loved visiting Pearl Harbor! Our children especially
enjoyed the short boat-ride over to the memorial and
seeing the ship below the water's surface. Before our
visit, we rented the movie so our children could get a
sense of what it
was all about. It really helped them to understand the
tragedy and loss that took place. The documentary film before the trip over to the memorial was
very good and informative.
Whether
you like to take a walk down the lane of history, swim
& surf on
the beautiful beaches, shop, or enjoy fine
dining...there is so much to do
and see that you will want to return many times to
this island paradise.
Enjoy the fun as a family, relaxation and
build unforgettable memories!
What is the time difference
from the continental US?
Hawaii follows Hawaii Standard Time (GMT-10 hours),
which is 5 hours behind Eastern Standard Time and 2
hours behind Pacific Standard Time. Hawaii does not
observe Daylight Savings Time so add one extra hour
to the time difference during this period (March
through November).
When is a good time to visit Hawaii?
Anytime of year is a good time to visit Hawaii.
The average temperature here is between 75˚-85˚ F. Summer,
between April and November is warmer and drier while winter,
between December and March, is a bit cooler.
Trade winds keep things
comfortable year-round. Whale watching season begins in late December
and ends
in early May. Peak
whale watching
months are between January and early April.
November through February is big wave
surf season on
Hawaii’s north shores.
What is the main airport in Hawaii?
Honolulu International Airport (HNL) on
Oahu is Hawaii's
major airport, serving as the entry point for most
of Hawaii's visitors. All major domestic carriers
and many international carriers serve Oahu, so you
can get here from just about anywhere. There are
also direct flights from the continental US to
Maui,
Kauai, and
Hawaii's Big Island.
Do I need a car to get around on Hawaii?
Transportation options vary from island to island,
but to really experience Hawaii, you should
consider renting a car. Many visitors also enjoy
taking bus tours to conveniently explore the
Islands. For most islands you can also get around
by shuttle, taxi or public transportation.
Do I need my passport to get to Hawaii?
Since Hawaii is the 50th state, you won’t need to
bring your passport unless you’re visiting from
outside the United States or traveling to another
country after Hawaii.
What should I pack on my trip to Hawaii?
It's warm in Hawaii, so pack your summer
attire. You may want to bring a jacket or sweater
for the evenings. Bring warmer clothes if you plan
on visiting higher elevations like
Haleakala National Park
in
Maui. Suits and
ties are very rarely worn here. Bring some casual dress clothes
or resort wear if you plan
on
experiencing Hawaii's nightlife. You can buy an
aloha shirt and flip-flops (or slippers, as the
locals call them) when you get here.
Hawaii's currency
is the US dollar. Traveler's checks aren't necessary since
credit cards are widely accepted and ATM machines are plentiful.
Don't worry if you forget something. Hawaii's retail stores and
malls have everything you need, including plenty of sunscreen.
JUST IMAGINE...
YOU COULD BE HERE!
